Eat Well Get Moving

Eat Well Get Moving! is a healthy weight promotion program with the aim of encouraging students to eat more vegetables and fruit and be more active. Research shows that eating more vegetables and fruit and being more active are the most effective behaviours a person can have to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

What we heard from the teachers who participated in 2011:
“Excellent program and the children are always very excited to participate.”
“Thank you for the program. The kids enjoy it. We appreciate the passes for the local rec(reation) center.”

How the Program Works

The Eat Well, Get Moving! program takes place between February 1 and April 30, 2012. Participants can start any time within the 3-month period although we encourage participation throughout the 3 months.

Interested schools and teachers register their classes to participate. Students are given Crunch & Go cards on which they track the number of vegetables and fruit they eat and the number of minutes of activity they do. At the end of each month cards are collected for entry in to a draw for prizes.

To find out more about the prizes available see our prizes section.

How to Register

To register your school or class please print off the registration form,
fill it out and fax it to Wanda Hurdle at 250-744-1042.

How to Fill Out Your Crunch & Go Card

Check out the NEW Crunch & Go card! A new colourful look with a fun quiz, recipe and drawing activity. The same fun way to track vegetable and fruit intake and physical activity .

Vegetables and Fruit:
Every time you eat one serving of vegetables or fruit cross off or colour in a half of an orange slice on your cards during the appropriate month.

Did you know?
Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide recommends school-age children and youth eat between 5 and 8 servings of Vegetables and Fruit each day.

What makes a serving of vegetables and fruit?

Fruits and Veggies

Physical Activity:
For every 15 minutes of activity you do, cross off or colour in half a sneaker on your Crunch & Go card.

What counts?
Any activity that increases breathing or heart rate builds muscle strength or stretches your muscles.

  • a brisk walk
  • a game of tag
  • skipping
  • yoga
  • swimming
  • skating
  • playing sports

There are new Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines and new Canadian Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines. It is recommended that children and youth engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. It is also recommended that children and youth limit the time they spend in sedentary activities such as recreational screen time to a maximum of 2 hours a day.
